Chennai: Doyen of Carnatic music, Dr M Balamuralikrishna, has been chosen for the Dakshinamurthy Naadapuraskaaram (Dakshinamurthy award), this year, to be presented in memory of famed musician Dakshinamurthy Swamigal.
The Dakshinamurthy Sangeeta Trust and Peringottukara Devasthanam, Kerala, announced the award at a press meet in the city yesterday.
Balamuralikrishna has been selected for the award for his contribution to the field of music and fine arts, said trustee Jayaprakash Sarma.
The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, citation, shield and shawl, will be presented at a function organised by the Dakshinamurthy Sangeeta Trust and Peringottukara Devasthanam at the Peringottukara Sri Vishnumaayai Bhuvaneswari Amman Temple in Trissur district, Kerala, on 23 January 2016, said K G Haridas, a representative of the Devasthanam.
Dakshinamurthy memorial music festival would be held there from 23 January to 31 January, and it will include a Carnatic music concert by Balamuralikrishna on 23 January, said P Dakshinamurthy.

Last year, the award was presented to playback singer S Janaki.
