Chennai: "Never think that movies are popular than dramas. There is a considerable shift of audience from reel to real and around 15 new plays are staged every year," says Chandramohan, an established script writer residing in Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai. He has won numerous awards for his contribution in the field.
He started writing about two decades back and won the first award in less than two years of his journey.
Chandramohan bagged the first prize out of 10,000 participants in a competition conducted by a leading Tamil weekly and that fuelled his interest. He also acted in few dramas.
Talking about his own banner, Mother Creations, he says, "My friend and I have started it with zeal to produce more stage plays. So far, we have done nine dramas and each one of them won an award. For all the drama script writers, Mylapore Academy award is synonymous to Oscar and I won it continuously in the last five years."
Chandramohan says that K Balachander is one of his role models and explaining about his friendship with him, he says, "I once wrote a drama called Nethra Darsanam and we invited him to watch it. After the show got over, he called me and said that it is a masterpiece and compared it to Kamal Haasan."
"From then, I started working with him and I was with him till his last breath. One of the projects we worked on is Ramani vs Ramani."
He also worked on many films, the latest one being 'Manal Kayiru2'. But, he expresses that his soul can only be found in drama.
Talking about the factors that are to be kept in mind while writing a drama, he says,"First of all, the script must be written on a societal aspect and it must be suitable for all age groups as dramas attract dynamic audience. The complete duration of the play must be gripping because if the visitors get bored in the middle, they start talking and whole essence and hard work of the drama will be lost."
"Also, I do not compromise in the performance of artistes. There will be rehearsal for at least two months," he added.
Some of his tokens of appreciation include an award for best play (Swasam) by Karthik Fine Arts, best story for 'Poi Mei' by Mylapore Academy, best story writer rolling trophy for 'Nethra Darsanam' by Karthik Fine Arts. His next project is a drama on the life history of U Ve Swaminatha Iyer.
