Karunanidhi introduces candidates at rally

Chennai: Congress president Sonia Gandhi directed arrows at the AIADMK and BJP at an election rally at Island Grounds in the city on Thursday evening.

Sharing the stage with DMK chief M Karunanidhi and other senior leaders of the alliance, she invoked memories of December floods and alleged 'inaction' by the ruling AIADMK government.

Though the people-turnout at the event was not as big as that of the AIADMK's maiden campaign that was held at the same venue, the DMK alliance attracted people in decent numbers.

The audience were in for a surprise when the DMK chief read out the names of the candidates. For, none of the candidates, who were busy chatting, paid heed to the announcement until they were prodded by DMK leader T R Baalu.

Cadres of all the parties in alliance with the DMK attended the campaign.

Peter Alphonse, who recently switched to the Congress from the TMC and 'known for his oratorical skills', distorted the speech of Sonia. When she said AIADMK was supporting Modi government, Peter translated it as AIADMK and BJP having secret pact.

Karunanidhi's speech was brief as much of his time was occupied in introducing the candidates.

Unaware of the release of the AIADMK manifesto just before the event began, TNCC president E V K S Elangovan mocked Jayalalithaa for not releasing one.

There were no major traffic snarls near the venue though traffic was affected up to Anna Salai.
