ICF in Chennai gets funds for development

Chennai: City-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has been allocated Rs 199.8 towards the modernisation drive.

It is learnt that the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the annual budget had made this announcement. The Railway Ministry has sanctioned Rs 199.8 crore to modernise ICF as part of a Rs 327-crore project to ensure that it shifts from making conventional coaches to Linke-Hoffman-Busch (LHB) coaches in the next couple of years.

Safety aspects are said to be at higher levels in LHB coaches when compared to the conventional coaches presently used by the Railways, owing to which the shift is being planned.

The LHB coaches are said to have features like anti-climbing and anti-telescoping (coaches ploughing into each other during a derailment or accident). Which can help reduce damages to life should accidents occur. Conventional coaches suffered extensive damage as was seen in the recent mishap at Kanpur.

The Ministry has spent Rs 75 crore in the past two years on the project, and the bigger allocation is seen as an indication that things would be expedited.
